Smith-Corona launched the world's first portable electric typewriter. The first synthetic radioactive substance, Radium E, was first produced at U.C. Berkeley. Patty Hearst was kidnapped by the so-called Symbonese Liberation Army and two months later would help them rob banks. Born: Charles Lindbergh, Rosa Parks, and Alice Cooper. Dead: Liberace (AIDS) and Karen Carpenter (Anorexia).
