Sorry, no holidays today, but it's a good day to give up smoking since on this day in 1586 Sir Walter Raleigh brought the first tobacco from America to England. The US State Department was created. The Boxer Rebellion started today in 1900 and the Korean War ended. It's okay to be gay in England - Homosexual acts between consenting adults were finally decriminalized in 1967. H. J. Heinz was incorporated. Orville Wright stayed aloft for over an hour in 1908. The first person died of Legionnaire's disease in Philly in 1976. The first electric car was demonstrated in Boston in 1888 – a tricycle that ran on batteries. Baseball greats Leo Durocher and Alex Rodriguez were born today. We said goodbye to Gertrude Stein in 1946, William Wyler in 1981, James Mason in 1984 and Bob Hope in 2003.
