  On this day in history

It's a good day to be in Berlin to celebrate that city's founding in 1237. Or celebrate the opening of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 1843. Today in 1969 the Woodstock Festival opened at Bethel, NY in the Catskills, (now the site of a fabulous arts complex - Bethel Woods). "The Wizard of Oz" premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in 1939. 1945 saw V-J Day, the ending of the war in Japan. And after 200 years of British rule, India and Pakistan became independent. The Panama Canal opened. The first recorded hurricane in America occurred. Tivoli Gardens bloomed in Copenhagen. Born: Napoleon Bonaparte, T.E. Lawrence, Oscar Peterson, Debra Messing, Princess Anne and Ben Affleck. Died: Macbeth, King of Scotland in 1057, René Magritte, and Oscar Levant.
