Today in 451 AD the Romans under unknown general Aetius handily beat Attila the Hun at Chalon-sur-Marne. In 1198 King Richard I defeated the French at Gisors. In 1824 Trapper Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake (he believed he had found the Pacific Ocean). On this day in 1853, the first railroad passenger station opened in Indianapolis and Mr. Otis demonstrated his first elevator. The electric stove was patented. Mr. Goldman and Mr. Sachs teamed up today to deal in securities in 1882. Maritime news: launched today luxury liner QEII in 1966, Mauretania in 1906 and USS Constitution 1797 (but it stick and had to be re-launched a month later). Born: Bill Murray and Sophia Loren.
