Say goodbye to Aquarius and hello to Pisces. One of the fiercest battles in history took place today in 197 AD in Lyons with 300,000 soldiers in combat. Today in 1878, a Wax Cylinder Machine, better known as a phonograph, was the first invention patented by Thomas A. Edison. Rescuers reached the 45 survivors of the Donner Party who survived six months in the Sierra Nevada mountains by eating their dead. 1,000 Japanese soldiers were eaten by crocodiles in the Bay of Bengal today in 1945. Also today in that year was the landing of 30,000 US Marines on Iwo Jima, beginning that decisive battle in WWII. People born today: Nicolaus Copernicus, David Garrick, Merle Oberon, Eddie Arcaro, Lee Marvin and Smokey Robinson. Dead: Andre Gide and Blondin.
