Five American Indian Tribes were virtually destroyed in King Philip's War which ended today in 1676. Also extinct today: the Quagga, a zebra-like mammal, the last of which died at Amsterdam Zoo in 1883. A giant panda was the first to be born in captivity in a Mexican zoo. Four people out of 524 lived after a jumbo jet crashed in Japan. The first Model T Ford was finished in 1908. Singer patented his sewing machine. The US minimum wage went up to $1.00 per hour in 1955. IBM's personal computer with 40K of RAM and a giant 256K hard drive went on sale in 1981. Born today: Diamond Jim Brady, Radclyffe Hall, Cecil B. DeMille, William Goldman, Pete Sampras and Mark Knopfler. Died: William Blake, James Russell Lowell, Ian Fleming, Henry Fonda, B. Kliban and John Cage.
